Born 1977 in Montreal, Quebec, Mark Berens artistic talents can be traced to his grandparents on both sides. That creative upbringing eventually led Mark to the Ontario College of Art & Design where he graduated in 1999 with a degree in Illustration.
“I’ve always been around painters thanks to my grandparents on both sides of the family. Father’s mom was into flower filled still lifes reeking of oil paints. While my mother’s parents both enjoyed their watercolor landscapes of southern Spain. I started experimenting with oils my first year at O.C.A.D and instantly found it to be my choice of creativity. Upon graduating in 1999, I ventured down the road of editorial illustration and design work, only to become unfulfilled and frustrated. Seems I wasn’t ‘painting’ anymore for these art directors. A stint in Whistler instantly inspired me with a reconnection to the outside world and I began this artist’s journey of landscapes in the mountains. Since then I’ve traveled to many parts of Canada in search of a lasting fulfillment.”
